Part 2-Chapter 1

Part 2- The Dawning Chapter 1          One step          One word          One act          And the past is gone.           Maia stood in the cold mist, her bare ankles numbing. She huddled under the worn and torn cloak that had once belonged to her mother. Tim stood a couple paces away. Dark circles hung under his handsome eyes. Sleep had evaded Maia too, the night before. With a bang, Anna exited the hut that Maia would no longer call home.          "Come on folks! We have places to go! People to see!" Anna cried. "More like a place to go, and a person to see, but who cares? We still need to head out so come on!" Maia and Tim stared blankly at Anna. Maia felt the energy practically radiating off of Anna, and envied her for it. Her long night stared at her in the face, and wondered how anyone c...

Part 1-Chapter 7

Part One - The Reveal Chapter 7 A man may be composed on the outside, but on the inside, thoughts run amok. “Said what, Maia?” asked Tim.  “I-I…” thinking fast Maia continued, “Who said….they're hungry because I am!” and she turned around and made her way to their little kitchen. She took the coarse brown bag of flour, and emptied its contents into a bowl. There was less than a cup left.  Maia’s hands continued working while her mind was miles away. Her thoughts chased each other in circles, never leaving enough times to draw conclusions. The voice was like a caress. A soft voice. Like Water falling on hands. But no one else heard it. Could the night of stress, anxiety and sleep be catching up to her. Yes. That must be it. As soon as she ate breakfast she would sleep. Deep down, she wasn't convinced, but Maia had experience with pushing thoughts aside. So she did.   Tim and Anna came to eat some of the pancakes she had prepared. And then, with a stomach slightly mor...

Part 1-Chapter 6

Part One - The Reveal Chapter 6 Another day, another explanation. Anna marched toward Maia and said in a voice that trembled with emotion, “Who is Hanna Buford?” Maia stood up and felt anger surge up inside her. The emotions of the past few days came crashing to the surface, and poor Anna was the one to get the brunt of it. Bristling with a cloud of darker emotions Maia said, “Dont play dumb. Im not stupid. It's quite simple really. The Buford fire is a tale I've been hearing since I was a babe. My Father was there. He witnessed it. He said that Mrs. Buford didn't come out of the inferno, but he did see a figure running into the forest. Now, my Father would never let a mysterious human run away, so he probably ran after you. You most likely discussed Elements.” “That doesn't explain how you knew I am Hanna Buford.” said Anna, abandoning all pretenses of not knowing. “The fire explains it. My Father also told us how Mr. Buford mistreated his wife and child ...

Part 1-Chapter 5

Part One - The Reveal Chapter 5 The beginning means a fresh start. A new seed sown. A new child born.           Benjamin pulls his cloak tighter around his shoulders. His thick shirt cannot keep out all the cold. He glances at Mary. Her lips are set in a thin line and she shivers beneath her worn shawl. Benjamin takes off his cloak and drapes it around her shoulders. She smiles at him gratefully and opens her mouth to speak, but Benjamin holds a finger to his lips and gestures around.  They approach the clearing where Benjamin confronted Anna. Mary takes Benjamin's hand. She looks scared. Anna is sitting on a fallen log. Her hand is lit up with Fire. Shoulders hunched, and eyes alert and wide. She rocks to and fro. When she sees them she stands.  “Hello Anna,” says Benjamin.  “Hello. Sit down, please.” Anna is wearing the same dress as she was on that fateful night. It is dirty at the bottom, and thorns cling to the hem like a man...

Part 1-Chapter 4

Part One - The Reveal Chapter 4 The truth wears many different outfits. Some are drab and plain. Other’s are gaudy and loud, with bright colors and exciting surprises. But it is the dark ones, the scary ones, the unknown ones, that shape us and make us who we are, and help us find who we can be. Benjamin walks home from the plot of green grass the children call the park. Mary Smith and him had been taking a night stroll. He is fifteen and as tall as a tree. His dark brown eyes shine with the light of the millions of stars above him. His chin length black hair is tied up with a blue piece of fabric. He looks down at his shiny gold watch. It is a quarter to eleven. His feet pick up the pace. At eleven, his mother has instructed their maid to lock the front door. “To ensure the kids are home,” she says.  Mrs. Stevens is a tall angular woman. She is strict, but a good mother and woman. Benjamin has five siblings, each of them are older than him. One and a half years separate each c...
